Utility Energy Budgeting

Most expenses can be budgeted by assuming the quantity previously used will continue into the future with similar business activity, therefore making the biggest variable to be the cost of the item to budget. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work with energy as a building will consume a baseline of energy whether the location is closed for business or at peak capacity. Learn more about what utility energy budgeting services Burton can offer.

Building Accurate Energy Budgets

Energy rates vary with season, tiered rates of volume, or even time of day instead of a fixed unit cost, with weather extremes also impacting the amount of energy used among many other factors. These influences contribute to a more complex process to build an accurate energy budget.

At Burton, we have an established process that helps to normalize these externalities and break down the account data into its fundamental components. Historical account data is disassembled month by month, taking into account weather data to normalize the energy curves. Rates are deconstructed into component parts, each projected forward with different increases based on market knowledge, energy futures pricing, contracts put in place, and other variables.

Burton takes historical data about each account, supply contract, and capital projects, to create a budget from the following process:

  • Establish a usage baseline – weather normalized, with spikes due to leaks and equipment malfunctions are removed and smoothed.
  • Rate Changes – Whether upcoming rate changes published, estimated, or supply contract changes.
  • Budget Adjustments – changes in operating hours, capital projects, and other adjustments are incorporated.
  • Budget Validation & Presentment – Final quality checks are preformed and the budget can be exported in a format that can be loaded into the client’s systems.

The resulting budget will provide usage, cost, and rate on a monthly basis for each commodity on each site.
