Performance Monitoring and Reporting

The key to objectively determining the impact being made through conservation initiatives is to document energy and water consumption and costs in an easy-to-use format that emphasizes metrics important to client operations. This begins with a base program which is formatted to include sector-specific measures and then customized to better represent individual client needs.

Identifying Important Metrics Through Conservation Initiatives

The utility consulting industry has significantly increased the number of “standard” reports to clients to prove the flexibility of their platforms. At Burton, a different approach is taken – instead of pushing large amounts of data at our clients, the focus is on sending actionable and usable information.

The views and reports are custom tailored for specific industries. The reports normalize by square footage, weather, calendar normalization, and other industry-specific benchmarks, rolling up by regional management or location types as needed.

Customized Views Specific to Our Clients

Since clients are sensitive to different operational goals (more effective cash management around utilities, overall reductions, consistency in operations, etc.), customized views of the individual corporate business needs are typically created and included in the overall energy program.

Management of outliers in terms of cost or usage requires a calendar-month normal view of data, further normalized by looking at similar sites and data year-over-year.

The images below are monthly performance report examples from the hospitality sector.

Brand-Specific Compliance Reporting

Additionally, Burton submits monthly utility data for clients, as required, to specific environmental and social performance reporting platforms to maintain compliance. For example, Burton currently provides monthly reporting for properties that are part of several different hospitality companies with brand-specific platforms.

This includes Marriott MESH, IHG Green Engage, Hilton LightStay, etc. Many of these programs help manage and track environmental, sustainability, and corporate responsibility performance across a large portfolio of properties. Burton can help properties stay compliant with those reporting requirements by automatically providing the energy related data needed each month.
