Performance Monitoring and Reporting

Tracking energy and water consumption with a user-friendly format is crucial to objectively assessing conservation and initiatives’ impact. We provide a format that quickly highlights metrics relevant to client operations by starting with a standardized template tailored to include industry-specific measures. Then, we customize the template to address each client’s unique needs. Our goal is quality versus quantity, which means instead of pushing large amounts of data at our clients, the focus is on sending customizable, actionable and usable information.

Custom Technology Platform

Our custom technology platform, the Burton Energy Strategy Platform (Burton ESP), is a comprehensive utility visualization and management platform provided for all our clients. With the Burton ESP, you can easily view all energy, water, and waste data. Our customized platform allows performance improvement to be tracked while planning future program enhancements and expansions. Burton ESP provides a comprehensive suite of features, including physical site information, raw and normalized performance data, and savings verification.

Utility Expense Management

Burton has been in the business of portfolio-wide data and expense management for over 15 years. Identifying missing bills, accounts, sources, and sites in an open and auditable way is a significant differentiator that allows our clients to get a better understanding of usage and for us to create cost-reduction strategies. Leveraging the Burton ESP, we can generate a more granular view of the utility data for a more targeted and tailored approach to reduce operating expenses.

Utility Energy Budgeting

Energy rates vary based on season, tiered volume rates, weather extremes, and even time of day. Burton’s established process for energy budgeting can help normalize these externalities and condense account data into its fundamental components. We take your historical energy data, supply contracts, and capital projects to create a comprehensive energy budget that provides usage, cost, and monthly rate for each site commodity.

Utility Account Management Services

Burton provides services to manage utility companies on your behalf. These are delivered using the billing data, the Burton ESP, and our team of experienced energy analysts and engineers. These management services include deposit management, identifying unusual or incorrect billing anomalies, billing inquiries, fee disputes, and much more.

Measurement and Verification

Our measurement and verification (M&V) services are an essential accountability process for validating savings over time. Monthly utility data is calendar and weather normalized with additional industry-specific metrics also applied to more accurately validate usage and savings. This not only helps confirm that realized savings are meeting expected savings, but is also leveraged by our clients when requesting additional capital from leadership for further program expansion.

FAQs

What is utility data analytics?

Utility data analytics is a process that collects, analyzes, and interprets enterprise-wide utility data.  Data analytics can help companies in many ways, including optimizing operations, identifying outliers, predicting future trends, and validating savings.

Why are utility data analytics important?

Utility analytics help companies analyze large amounts of data to gain insights into operational performance, identify outliers, and validate savings. Performance reports provide monthly insight into how each site and/or region is performing compared to budget while M&V services validate projected savings and are leveraged when requesting additional capital for program expansion.

What are some examples of how utility data and analytics are used?

Companies can use data and analytics to improve operational efficiency, provide dynamic energy management, provide energy demand forecasting, and minimize waste. Organizations can use this data to enhance operational efficiency while managing costs and meeting regulatory requirements.

What are the challenges associated with utility data and analytics?

Though data analytics provides many benefits, using the data can be challenging. Poor-quality data can lead to errors, misleading insights, and inefficient processes. While there are some challenges, Burton has established and proven processes to ‘clean’ the data and provides a safe, efficient, and reliable way to track and use utility data.
