Renewable Energy Options

Renewable Energy Certificates (REC)

  • Simple way to reduce your carbon footprint support clean energy initiatives.
  • RECs are issued when one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity is generated from a renewable energy source and delivered to the grid.
  • Burton can include RECs on your electricity contract for up to 100% of the usage or provide pricing options for a standalone REC purchase contract.

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

  • Contractual agreement where the buyer agrees to purchase an amount of energy generated by a renewable asset at a fixed $/megawatt-hour (MWh).
  • Allows businesses to access renewable energy without the upfront capital costs of owning and installing the system.
  • Long-term contracts, often 10-20 years, for large volume users.

On-Site Solar Generation

  • Installation of solar panels on roof, car parks, owned land, etc.
  • The most direct way of accessing renewable energy, but upfront capital costs can be well above budget.
  • Burton will conduct a feasibility assessment and provide quotes from our network of installers across the U.S.

Community Solar

  • Allows multiple customers to subscribe to the power generated from third-party solar farms.
  • Benefits include 5-15% savings depending on the state and program.
  • Commitment term varies by program, some programs include flexible terms, such as 12-month cancellation with no penalty.

Renewable Natural Gas

  • Biogas that has been upgraded for use in place of conventional natural gas.
  • Various projects across the U.S. from landfills, anaerobic digesters, production facilities.
  • Typically requires high usage threshold for procurement.

Carbon Offsets

Carbon offsets are tradeable rights or certificates linked to activities that reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. By buying these certificates, you can fund projects designed to limit CO2 emissions, remove greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the atmosphere, or avoid emissions altogether. This strategy offsets the buyer’s CO2 emissions with an equal amount of CO2 reductions or avoidance elsewhere.

Carbon Offsets vs. RECs

Basic Differences Offsets RECs
Unit of Measure Metric tons of CO2 or CO2e Megawatt hours (MWh)
Source Projects that avoid or reduce GHG emissions Renewable electricity generators
Purpose Represent GHG emissions reductions; provide support for emissions reduction activities; and lower costs of GHG emissions mitigation Convey use of renewable electricity; underlie renewable electricity use claims; expand consumers’ electricity service choices and support renewable electricity development
Corporate GHG Inventories and Reporting Reduce or offset an organization’s scope 1, 2, or 3 emissions Can lower an organization’s gross market-based scope 2 emissions from purchased electricity
Consumer Environmental Claims Can claim to have reduced or avoided GHG emissions outside their organization’s operations Can claim to use renewable electricity from a low or zero emissions source
Additionality Test Requirements Required. Each project is tested for additionality to ensure that it is beyond business as usual. Not required.
