Commissioning is the process of ensuring that a building’s operating systems such as HVAC, electrical, and controls are designed, installed and programmed for peak performance. Over time however, these systems can be overridden or come out of their optimal performance standards, leading to a need for retro-commissioning (RCx).

The goal of a retro-commissioning study is to evaluate the building and its controls and optimize operating strategies to make the building as energy efficient as possible while still maintaining occupant comfort. RCx is used to help a facility and its systems operate at an optimum level to meet current and anticipated building requirements. It relies on testing and short-term diagnostic monitoring to uncover and systematically evaluate energy and cost-saving opportunities and recommend associated low- or no- cost measures. Depending on the facility type and existing conditions, RCx studies typically identify savings of 5-12% of a building’s annual energy costs.

Fixing ventilation dampers
Adjusting chiller operation to better match building load
Reducing ventilation in over-ventilated areas

Reducing supply air static pressure set points
Repairing economizers
Implementing heating and cooling lockouts
