The Issue

A multinational software company was experiencing excessive water consumption which was negatively impacting their sustainability efforts. Despite prior investigations, they could not pinpoint the source of the high usage at one of their office complexes and needed additional expertise. As such, Burton was brought in to provide a comprehensive water assessment.

The Burton Solution

During the site assessment, submetering technology was deployed to capture real-time consumption data. Additionally, over the course of several days, all end uses related to irrigation, cooling towers, kitchens, fitness centers, and plumbing fixtures were evaluated. Ultimately, supply lines were isolated and it was determined that the high water intensity was cause by an outside-the-perimeter irrigation line that was used as wildfire protection.

By identifying and repairing this leak, the complex was able to reduce usage by 5.2 million gallons annually, saving $16,000 in operating expense.
