For the first time in 18 years, US crude oil production will exceed net imports. While the role of the federal government in this production surge is debatable, the results of increased horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracking to capture oil trapped in shale rock is proving to be very successful. This upward trend in crude oil production is expected to continue in the short term, moving the U.S. closer to a stated goal of energy independence.
