Articles about a new proposal that was published in this weeks issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences have been popping up all over the web today. Apparently Federico Capasso, an Applied Physics professor at Harvard, has developed a method he thinks will make it possible to generate electricity by emitting infrared light. The devices he describes in his proposal are basically the inverse of a solar panel. Capasso explains it like this…

It’s not at all obvious, at first . . . To generate power by emitting, not by absorbing light, that’s weird. It makes sense physically once you think about it, but it’s highly counterintuitive. We’re talking about the use of physics at the nanoscale for a completely new application.
